China is losing ground to other emerging markets including Brazil in the drive to learn English, according to a study ranking world wide proficiency in the international language of commerce。

English proficiency is at a premium as the balance of power between China and English-speaking countries such as the UK and US shifts and Beijing seeks to carve out a more powerful leadership role on the world stage。

On last month's state visit to the UK,first lady Peng Liyuan impressed with her fluent English- -although her husband,Xi Jinping, depended upon translators。

Despite this, some regional governments in China have recently opted to cut the time spent teaching and testing English in Chinese public high schools, lowering the weighting of English in the national university entrance exam, the gaokao。

The study, due for public release on Tuesday, shows China fell 10 places to 47th in a ranking of 70 countries compiled by EF Education First, which based its rankings on test data from more than 900,000 adults sitting online tests。

EF said most of the countries that moved ahead of China this year were from Latin America。“These Latin American countries have kicked off ambitious national initiatives focused on English-language training, including Brazil's English Without Borders programme and Mexico's Project 100,000," EF said in a statement。

“The Chinese government, on the other hand, has questioned how much emphasis should be placed on English training in the public education system。'

The education group said China had initially scaled the top ranks by devoting plenty of class time to English instruction, whereas continued improvement would require “more sophisticated approaches focused on communicative mastery rather than testing abilities"。

But some would-be students are also querying the value of studying overseas, hitherto a popular choice。

Employees bearing postgraduate degrees from overseas command similar salaries to their peers who stayed home, according to Jenifer Feng, chief human resources expert at 51job, the leading Chinese employment agency。

That may explain the slowdown in growth of the number of Chinese enrolled in US higher education。Last year the expansion in their numbers was the slowest in seven years, according to the Institute of International。

Education and the US state department。 China remains the biggest country of origin for international students at US universities。

The US Council of Graduate Schools said late last year that the number of Chinese first-time enrolments at postgraduate level had fallen for the first time in at least a decade。

12、 Para、II

13、 Para、II

14、 Para、V

15、 Para、VI

General activities for the topic of inventions。

Para、I

The most fun and speaking-intensive W ay of tackling inventions is for students to make up their own in pairs or small groups and then present them to the class or try to sell them to their partner (see below for details of those later stages)、 You can add language and help give them ideas by giving them:

-objects that they should invent replacements for。

-actions that they could make their invention do。

-wards they could use to describe their invention (materials, shape, types of power, actions, positive adjectives, etc、)。

Para、II

Either with their own inventions or ones they have been given (pictures and/or descriptions), students roleplay trying to sell them to each other、 This can be made more involved and fun by giving them roleplay cards such as“ You are very conservative and don't like anything new",“The last thing that this sales representative sold to you was quickly discontinued" and“ Price is the most important thing to you"。

Para、III

As in real life, presenting inventions makes a lot of sense、This can be their ow n inventions, real inventions (including from the past or near future),or science fiction invent ions、 People listening can ask questions, argue that it won't be a good idea or work,or just vote at the end on who has the best idea (apart from their own)。

Para、IV

Students read or listen to descriptions, perhaps from their classmate or teacher, and guess what invention is being talked about。

Para、V

Inventions is perhaps the best of all topics to do the TEFL classic of guessing things from the photo and then reading to check、 This works best with very old inventions, prototypes of things coming up or inventions in science fiction that don't exist yet。

Para、VI

It can be quite amusing and a good test of their argumentative powers to get students to argue that inventions have made or are likely to make life worse,e.g that the computer has made working life more intolerable、 It is also possible to find articles and blog posts on this topic by searching the internet for topics such as“ How mobile phones have made life worse”。

It's quite difficult to come up with opinions on inventions, so to make debates work it is generally a good idea to give them roles like “You distrust all technology" and“ You work for the health and safety inspectorate"。

11、 B Para、 I提到actions that they could make their invention do,和选项B对应。

12、 C Para II中提到、、 students roleplay trying to sell them to each other。

Inventions is perhaps the best of all topics to do the TEFL classic of guessing things from the photo and then reading to check、,A项中提到guess the invention and check,故符合题意。

15、 F Para VI中提到It can be quite amusing and a good test、、 to make life worse,这里主要谈论了发明的好处与坏处,F的内容与该段内容相对应。

Read the following passage and choose from sentences marked A to E to fill in the blanks、 Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET (10 points; 2points each)

Uber is focusing more funds and firepower on beating local competition in China, with the tax- booking app confirming it has raised $1.2bn in a round that included investment from Chinese search engine Baidu。

The San Francisco start- up,which has been valued at $50bn,raised the additional funding for Uber China shortly after it was reported that local rival Didi Kuaidi had raked in $3bn in a recent cash call。

The fundraising gives Uber China, which is a separate company,a $7bn pre- money valuation, according to a person familiar with the matter。16 Uber confirmed the investment, first reported in an interview with Travis Kalanick, chief executive, on Chinese website Sina。

17

Uber has dominated the taxi-booking app market in hundreds of cities globally and is expanding beyond ferrying people into also delivering packages。18 where many US internet companies, including Google and Amazon, have stumbled。

Didi Kuaidi, formed from a merger between Didi Dauche and Kuaidi Dauche this year, raised $2bn at a valuation of about $15bn in July。 But the round has not closed and may increase 19 。Uber says it has about 50 percent of the taxi-booking market, but Didi Kuaidi says it has 80 percent、 20  by subsidising trips, with Uber saying it wil spend $1bn in China this year。

Uber had suggested that Uber China could eventually be spun off with its own initial public offering in the country。 Mr. Kalanick said the San Francisco- based start-up could take investment from a Chinese“national brand"。

Choose the following sentences marked A to E to complete the above article、 Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET

16、

17、

18、

C、 It is hard to tell exactly how the Chinese market is divided

D、 Both sides are using their large fundraisings to lure more users

E、 Mr.Kalanick did not disc lose the other investors in the round

原文第二段还raised the additional funding 、、 、$3bn in a recent cash call,选项中的意思为融资并不会停止,可能会筹集到更多亿美元。

Uber has dominated the taxi-booking 、、 globally, 而后面却提到where many US 、、have stumbled、证明空格处应当用but引导转折。

Uber says it has about 50 percent of the taxi-booking market, but Didi Kuaidi saysithas80percent、这和C项的内容相对应,即表明了很难确切的知道中国市场是如何划分的。

The chart and table below demonstrate the feasibility of building China-Georgia Free Trade Zone。The bar chart clearly shows there is a fluctuation in the total sum of FDI and its proportion to GDP。 There was a sharp decrease from 2008 to 2009 both in the sum of FDI and the share in GDP。 The trend seemed to turn better after 2009 in both indexes, and the sum and the share grew steadily although another dec line appeared again from 2011 to 2012。 As for the sum of FDI, there was a plateau in 2008,with the number of approximately 1,500 million US dollars, accounting for about 11% in GDP。In the following years,FDI exceeded 1,000 million except 2009。In terms of the percentage of the share in GDP, however, the proportion each year takes up at least 6% of the GDP。

The table below tells about the trade in goods with Georgia in six years from 2009 to 2014。 Turnover between two areas grew dramatically from 2009 to 2011,i.e.the number of turnover in 2011 is triple to that in 2009。While from 2012 to 2014,the number became steadily。The percentage of growth for turnover changes according to economic condition of the certain year。 The sum of export faced sharp growths in two periods (from2009 to 2010 and from 2013 to 2014), while the sum of import keeps growing。It 's a bit hard to tell the predictions due to the economic conditions, but at least both import and export will grow, and the account taking up the w hole GDP climbs up。Export in 2014 surges to 90.39 US million dollars and might be over 100 million in the following years。On the contrary, there is something pessimistic。 Gap of balance is extending considerably and the gap will be larger。 (304 words)
