PART I WRITING(本题共50分)

Direct ion:

As the saying goes, “It’ S better to give than to receive", after seasons and centuries’ change, do you think it is still a truth? What is your view on this? Write an essay of about 400 words entitled:

Better to Give or to Receive?

You are to write in three parts: In the first part, state clearly what your view is. In the second part, support your view with appropriate reasons. In the last part, bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

PART II TEXT TRANSLATION(本题共 100分)

Directions: For this part, you should translate passage 1 from Chinese to English, passage 2 and passage 3 from English to  Chinese. You should write your answers on Answer Sheet.

Passage 1(本小题35分)

又到岁末年初了。中文“年”的本意是指丰收，俗语说“人寿年丰”。在古代，由于稻禾一年收获一次， 所以又引申出了‘岁’的意思，代表年四季，后来又表示一个人的年龄。在西方，人们通常有“新年许愿”，即希望在新的一年有所进步。其实，这种许愿不必太多，能做到一-两件小事就好。例如，最简单的，保证与人交谈时不再看手机，等等。

Passage 2 (本小题30分)

The virtue of prosperity is temperance; the virtue of adversity is fortitude; which in morals is the more heroical virtue. Prosperity is the blessing of the Old Testament; adversity is the blessing of the New; which carrieth the greater benediction, and the clearer revelation of God' s favour. Yet even in the Old Testament, if you listen to David' S harp, you shall hear as many hearse -like airs as carols; and the pencil of the Holy Ghost hath laboured more in describing the afflictions of Job than the felicities of Sal omon. Prosperity is not without many fears and distastes; and adversity is not without comforts and hopes.

Passage 3(本小题35分)

If you are proficient in more than one language, your opportunity for using your skills in an interpreter or translator career will be excellent over the next eight years, to say the least. This is a function of the global marketplace. Business is being done on a global scale, and immigration is also at all time high. The translation and interpreting industry has proved to be recession resistant, showing double digit growth even during the deepest global economic crisis. The need for good translators and interpreters hasn,t slowed even after the proliferation of free automated translation tools such as Google Translate or Bing Translator. This does not reduce the need for translators and interpreters, but rather creates a whole new market for their services as world communities become more connected.
